Calzone one of the most popular Italian dish.It is a delicious oven baked bread filled with a variation of topping and looks like half a moon.The taste is just like pizza and is loved by people across the globe.You can make miniature type of it which can be fried.
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 packet of yeast ( 2 tbsp)
- 1 egg (for dough)
- 1 beaten egg (egg wash)
- Pinch of salt
- 1 tsp sugar
- 3 tbsp oil
- warm water
- 3 tbsp tomatoes paste
- 1/2 cup mushrooms
- 1/2 cup olives
- 1 capsicum
- 2-3 boiled sausage(cut in circles)
- 1 cup mozeralla cheese
- 1 cup cheddar cheese
- 1 tsp poppy seeds
- 1 tsp oregano
- 1/2 tsp pepper
NOTE : This recipe makes one big size calzone that can serve approximately 6-8 people. You can make two medium size calzones from this recipe.
- In a wide open dish,put flour,salt,egg,oil,sugar and yeast.Pour warm water and start kneading the dough with warm water ,sprinkling the water slowly.You want a nice texture of the dough,not too stiff not to soft.
- Knead it for 5 minutes stretching it forward and overlapping it backward sprinkling extra flour to prevent from sticking.
- Grease a big bowl with oil and place the dough in the centre.sprinkle flour lightly on top.In a shopping bag place the bowl and tie it tight so no air can go inside.keep this in a warm place and let the dough rise for 3-4 hours.
- Once the dough has magically doubled in size,knead it once again for 3-4 minutes.
- Take it out and place it in the pizza pan,gently press the dough and make a circle pushing it to with your fingers to the corner of the pan.
- Prick the dough with a fork so it cooks evenly.
- At this stage pre-heat the oven 200°C for 15 minutes
- Now is the time you fill it up with your favourite wonderful toppings.Put the tomato paste through out the dough.
- Keep in mind that that you will put the filling in one side,one semi circle!!!Start putting on the mushrooms,olives,sausages,capsicum.Top it all with cheese and sprinkle pepper and oregano on top.
- Lastly,flip the other side on top of the other side and seal the dough completely by pressing both the corners together.
- Brush the egg wash on top the dough completely. Put the poppy seeds to give the bread a lovely look.
Bake the calzone for 15 to 20 minutes till the crust is nice,brown and crisp
remember to place the pan in the middle rack.
